On Sep 20, 2020, the first "Qiushi" Forum of Advanced Photonics was successfully held at the administration building in the International Campus of Zhejiang University alongside the webinars via webex. The forum was co-organized by International Research Center for Advanced Photonics, Joint International Center for Photonic Technology, Joint International Research Laboratory of Photonics (JIRLOP), State Key Laboratory of Modern Optical Instrumentations and College of Optical Science and Engineering, ZJU. It aims to provide platform to discuss the foreland of the technical development of advanced photonics, promote the technical exchange of young scholars both at home and aboard in the field of advanced photonics, continuously deepen exchanges and cooperation in scientific research and talent training, and enhance the attractiveness and academic influence of the subjects and the institutes.
Professor Daoxin Dai (Vice Dean of College of Optical Science and Engineering, ZJU), professor Yungui Ma (executive deputy director of the International Research Centre for advanced photonics), other professors in College of Optical Science and Engineering, and more than 20 young scholars from different countries, including United States, the United Kingdom, Australia, Singapore, Switzerland, Denmark etc, attended the forum.
Professor Daoxin Dai extended a warm welcome to all the guests who attended the forum and expressed his good expectations for the forum.
Professor Jianrong Qiu, director of Institute of Micro & Nano Photonics, ZJU, gave the first plenary talk. He reviewed the opportunity and challenge of laser manufacturing, as well as introduced the advantages, existing problems and practical applications of laser manufacturing overall. Subsequently, young scholars from California Institute of Technology (USA), Stanford University (USA), University of California, Berkeley (USA), Waymo (USA), Ayar Labs (USA), University of California, Santa Barbara (USA), SenseBrain Technology, University of Technology Sydney (Australia), University of Sydney (Australia), and National University of Singapore (Singapore) gave invited talks separately.
In the second plenary talk, Professor Sune Svanberg, director of the Lund Laser Centre (Sweden), introduced various application examples of laser spectroscopy in the fields of environmental, ecological, and biomedical fields. Afterwards, young scholars from EPFL (Switzerland), Oxford University (UK), University of Southampton (UK), University of Southern Denmark (Denmark), Technical University of Denmark (Denmark), Boston University (USA), University of Maryland (USA), Harvard University (USA), Interuniversity Microelectronics Centre (IMEC, USA), and University of Texas at Austin (USA) gave invited talks and shared their experience separately. The participants expressed their own opinions and had a heated discussion and exchange.
Finally, professor Daoxin Dai made a concluding statement. Professor Dai thanked the scholars for their excellent sharing, expressed his gratitude to the organizers committee and the volunteers for their efforts in the forum, and congratulated on the success of the first "Qiushi" Forum.
